现代“公主”一词常见作别称其它国家皇女或王女，女王则有时会翻译为公主。欧洲君主之闺女、姐妹、姑妈和其它直系王室成员之女的称号princess翻译为公主，有时会按照与君主的亲疏翻译成公主和公主。此外，一些非君主直系亲属而被封为Princess的女性有时也会翻译为公主，如茜茜公主(巴伐利亚女公爵与公主）、戴安娜公主（戴安娜王妃）。
朝鲜
朝鲜君主之女也称公主，李氏朝鲜阶段开始，则只有国王嫡女可称公主，庶女称翁主。
